How does a Markham order actually reach your door?

The Stouffville GO line has four stations inside Markham — Unionville, Centennial, Markham and Mount Joy. Weekday peak trains run roughly twice an hour in the peak direction only; outside those peaks the line runs hourly in both directions between Unionville or Mount Joy and Union Station, seven days a week. If you are riding one of them home, place the order before you board rather than after you get off. 10PM is the cutoff for same-day orders, not a closing time, and an order placed after 10PM is delivered the next day.

The geography of getting to you

Markham’s grid is the old concession system: ten north-south concession roads laid out in 1801, an intersection roughly every two kilometres. Highway 7 is the main east-west artery, and Highway 407, a privately owned toll route, serves the city from Yonge Street across to the York-Durham Line. Two river systems, the Don and the Rouge, run through Markham with their tributaries, so side streets stop and restart around the valleys. East of Donald Cousens Parkway the map thins out: the parkway is the boundary between Markham’s urban area and Rouge National Urban Park, and Reesor Road and Eleventh Line out there are rural routes with very few homes. Put the unit number and buzzer code in the delivery notes, mark the laneway on a country road, and meet the driver at the door with ID.

Five Markham neighbourhoods in more detail, each placed by its own landmarks and history.

• Buttonville. The name first appeared in 1851, on a post office granted to John Button and William Morrison, and was chosen over Millbrook, a name used unofficially since 1834. The 2005 heritage designation of the 1940 Women’s Institute hall on Woodbine Avenue calls it the old core’s only public building, and the City lists the area as a heritage conservation district study area. Buttonville Municipal Airport, which grew from a grass strip in use by 1953, closed in November 2023.
• Angus Glen. In 1957 Arthur Stollery bought farmland at Kennedy Road and Major Mackenzie Drive to raise Black Aberdeen Angus cattle, and named it Angus Glen Farm. The golf course built there opened to the public in 1995, and the club hosted the Canadian Open in 2002 and 2007. The Angus Glen Community Centre, on Major Mackenzie Drive East, houses a branch of Markham Public Library.
• Berczy Village. It carries the name of William Berczy, whom Parks Canada recognizes as the founder of Markham. In November 1794 he brought the township’s first settlers, a group that had left Germany for New York State before moving to Upper Canada. A plaque at the William Berczy Settlement Historical Cemetery, on the east side of Kennedy Road north of 16th Avenue, marks that settlement.
• Cathedraltown. The neighbourhood is named for the Cathedral of the Transfiguration, whose three gilded towers include a 64-metre centre tower. Pope John Paul II blessed its cornerstone in September 1984, during his visit to Canada. The neighbourhood’s design took its cues from European cathedral towns.
• Victoria Square. This crossroads hamlet took shape in the 1830s at Elgin Mills Road and Woodbine Avenue, and a post office carried the Victoria Square name from 1854 until 1914. In 1875 Christian Heise drew up a plan for eleven village lots there. Since 2010 a bypass has taken Woodbine Avenue traffic around the hamlet, and in 2016 the old stretch, now Victoria Square Boulevard, passed from York Region to Markham.
