Here is what the photos on this page show. The colour runs pale olive to lime green, with orange and copper hairs threaded through nearly every bud; in the close-up there are enough of them that the pile reads orange-flecked from a step back. A fine frost sits over the surface and pales the green without turning it white. In the two-bud shot the buds stand tall and taper to a point, spear-shaped rather than round, while the pile looks chunkier. The trim is tidy rather than sculpted: sugar-leaf tips are left on here and there, and the odd short stem shows.

Why citrus is the first note to fade

Citrus smells in cannabis are usually put down to monoterpenes such as limonene. Those are small, light molecules, and they evaporate more readily than the heavier sesquiterpenes, such as caryophyllene, that tend to be linked with the peppery, woody end of a smell. So when flower sits open, the top notes leave first and the base stays behind. On a lemon-forward strain, the top note is the whole point.

Every time the bag opens, room air trades places with the air around the buds, and a little more of that top layer goes with it. Warmth and light speed the process up. How to keep the back half of the bag bright

Open the big bag as rarely as you can. Move a few days' worth into a small airtight jar, press the air out of the 28G bag and close it properly, then keep it somewhere dark and cool: a cupboard, not a windowsill and not the top of the fridge. Skip the fridge and freezer themselves, too. Cold buds sweat when they come back into a warm room, and damp does more harm than a slightly dry bud ever will. Handle the buds less while you are at it, since frost knocked loose in the bag is smell that has left the flower.
