How to tell a fresh batch from an old one by hand and by ear

Squeeze a bud gently. Flower that was cured properly and has not been sitting gives a little and springs back, while old flower gives way and stays compressed, then crumbles under the same pressure. The stem is the second test: a fresh one bends and folds before it goes, an old one snaps clean and dry the moment you flex it. Then listen, because breaking a good bud is a quiet tearing sound and a tired one crackles like paper, with the pieces falling as dust instead of chunks. Smell is the last check — a bag reading of hay rather than of the strain has been in storage too long.
