The Most Effective Way On How To Get Resin Out Of Pipe

When you’re wanting to smoke a nice bowl of weed with your pipe, it just feels better when it’s nice and clean. Learning how to get resin out of a pipe isn’t a hard process, and things just feel better when they are clean. Resin can make a pipe appear very grimy and dirty, and smoking with a clean pipe lets you make the most out of your cannabis. There’s a couple of different methods on how to get resin out of a pipe, and each method has a couple of different steps to them.

Cleaning With Salt And Alcohol Method

Step 1

You’ll want to scrape the majority of the resin out of the pipe using something pointy. A paper clip or pin usually works just fine for this. If you want to smoke the resin later, then put it somewhere safe where you’ll remember where it is.

Step 2

Now, you’ll want to add some isopropyl alcohol in a bag along with the pipe. A ziplock bag works well for this. The pipe should be completely submerged in isopropyl alcohol. The recommended isopropyl alcohol formula should be around 99%. You can get away with anything above 70%, but the higher the percentage, the better it will clean your pipe.

Step 3

For this step, you’ll need some sea salt. Simply add about a full tablespoon of sea salt and mix it with the alcohol. The sea salt and alcohol mixture will break up and separate the resin in the pipe. If your mouthpiece is dirty and you want to clean that as well, then putting some sea salt in the mouthpiece will help with that. For those that want to smoke the resin later, you probably won’t want to add any salt to the alcohol. The alcohol should be fully evaporated before you decide to smoke the resin that’s left behind.

Step 4

After that, zip up the bag and then let it sit for a couple of hours. 2 hours of soaking the pipe in the salt and alcohol concoction should give it a good chance to break up the resin in it.

Step 5

Grab the bag around the bowl area and give it a good shake for about five minutes. Shaking it after it’s been soaking for two hours should help break it up even further and hopefully separate the remainder to the stubborn resin that’s left behind.

Step 6

After you’ve given the pipe a good shake to break up the last bits of resin, you can now remove the pipe from the bag. Take a close look at it and see if there’s any leftover resin on it. If you notice that a lot of resin still exists on the pipe, just repeat the whole process again. To speed things up a bit, purchasing a pipe cleaner can help. Using a cotton swab can smoothen the process, too.

Step 7

Once you’ve given the pipe a good inspection, use some soap and warm water to give it another wash. You can now toss away the bag that contains the alcohol and sea salt mixture. Grab a towel and then give the pipe a good rub to dry it off. Resin is a particularly sticky substance and will, unfortunately, cause stains to your clothing if you don’t exercise caution. Ensure to fully rinse off any alcohol that might be left on the pipe. Alcohol is a flammable substance, and if you don’t wipe it off, it could result in some negative consequences the next time you light up a bowl.

Step 8

If you want to be proactive and avoid having to do these in-depth cleans that can take a while, give your pipe a quick clean weekly. Once resin from cannabis builds up, it takes a lot more effort to get rid of, and even more so with glass pipes. If you clean your pipe weekly, you should probably only have to soak your pipe for about five minutes in the isopropyl alcohol. Wooden pipes are a little different. You won’t want to soak a wooden pipe on a weekly basis, but you can still give it a good scrub down with a toothbrush that’s been soaked in isopropyl alcohol.

Freezing The Resin Method

Step 1

For the first step of this method, you’ll place your resin-caked pipe in the freezer for about half an hour. Unlike the first method, you won’t have to worry about an initial scraping of any resin in the pipe. Freezing the pipe should cause the resin to become hardened. Ensure that you set a timer for the pipe inside the freezer for half an hour, because you won’t want it in there longer than that. If you do leave the pipe in the freezer for too long, it could risk breaking, especially the glass pipes.

Step 2

Now that the pipe has been in the freezer for half an hour, you can now remove it and start to scrape out the frozen and dried resin with a sharp tool. You’ll want to be brisk about this step because the resin tends to get really sticky again when it starts to heat up to room temperature. Find a piece of paper, a tray, or some plastic to work over for this step. When the resin is frozen and scraped, it will be kind of a sandy consistency that can cause quite a mess.

Step 3

Using the freezing method is one that you probably won’t want to do on a weekly basis. You can use this method about once a month because it’s considered more of a deep clean. The drastic temperature change can sometimes weaken the glass pipes, and you don’t want yours breaking.

Boiling The Pipe Method

Step 1

The first step in this method involves adding some water to a soup pot and then boiling it. The water should be high enough so that the pipe is fully submerged when it’s placed in the pot. Place the pot on the stove, crank up the temperature, and wait until the water starts to boil. For those that are using a glass pipe with this method, you’ll want to put the pipe inside the pot before you add any hot water. If you have a wooden pipe, don’t use this method for cleaning as it can cause damage and potentially change the color of the wood.

Step 2

Once the water is boiling, find a pair of tongs and then slowly lower the pipe into the pot. With the pipe held between the tongs, give the pipe a decent shake to break off any of the resin in the pipe. You’ll probably notice little pieces of resin becoming dislodged as you’re shaking it around in the water.

Step 3

Move the pipe back and forth in the boiling water for about six or seven minutes. Don’t exert too much force when you’re shaking it around because you don’t want to cause any damage to the pipe itself. If your pipe is really dirty, you might want to continue moving the pipe around for longer than seven minutes.

Step 4

After you’ve shaken up the pipe in the boiling water, you’ll now want to get a strainer and gather the resin. A coffee filter or normal mesh strainer works well for this. For those that like to smoke resin and want to use the resin that’s collected in the pot, you can easily just roll it into a little ball and place it in the freezer for later use.

Step 5

Get a paperclip or pipe cleaner and then give the inside of the pipe a good clean, ensuring to scrape the inside of the bowl to remove any leftover resin. Again, if you gather any chunks of resin, put them to the side so that they can dry for later use. Using the boiling method to clean your pipe is one that you’ll probably only want to use when you really want to give it a deep and thorough cleanse. The drastic change in temperatures can sometimes cause damage to the pipe. You can use some of the methods above for a metal pipe as well, and you won’t have to worry about them becoming damaged as easily as with glass pipes.

Finding the right tools to scrape your pipe with will save you a lot of headaches. You won’t want the edges of the tools you’re using to be too sharp, because that could potentially scratch your pipe. If you’re doing the alcohol cleaning method with your pipe, the resin should be completely dry before you go to smoke it. Beginners might want to try one of the other methods before using this one. If you want to speed up the evaporation of alcohol during the alcohol cleaning method, you could always find a plate, dump out the alcohol onto the plate, and then light it. Ensure that you don’t leave the fire sitting there for too long because it could crack the plate. You also won’t want to dump too much alcohol onto the plate, but just enough to fill the bottom of it. Once the fire starts to drift off, get a razor blade, and then scrape the bottom of the place. You’ll need 90% alcohol or higher for this to work effectively. The weakest part of a pipe is the inside of the bowl, and if you exert too much force into it, it could crack. For those just starting to smoke cannabis, you’ll want to know that resin might give you a headache because it has more carcinogens in it because it’s a byproduct of the cannabis being combusted.
