For those that are unaware of what kief even is, it’s basically just a stronger and more concentrated form of marijuana. Many people that haven’t seen it before most likely won’t even know what it is because it so similarly resembles a fine powder. But, this powder is composed of very small fragments of resin, and resin is extremely sticky and potent. Learning how to smoke kief without weed is a useful skill to have in your arsenal.
If you use a grinder or store cannabis in any type of jar, you’ll see this crystally powder on the bottom. There are a few different ways that you can consume kief. You can just regularly smoke it, eat it, or just use it to make hash, and then consume that.
The overall strength of the kief will depend on whatever cannabis strain that you’re using. The high you experience from consuming kief will depend on how tolerant you are to cannabis. Keep in mind, you’ll still have to follow all of the rules associated with cannabis use when you have kief in your possession.
The first method to consume kief is just by smoking it. You’ll experience the most potent effects with this method, and the effects will be stronger than just smoking cannabis itself. With kief, you can either just place it in a bowl and then smoke it, or you can roll a full joint of it. Kief burns a lot quicker than cannabis does, so, if you light it up, ensure that you consistently smoke it before it just burns itself away.
If you simply want an added kick to your high, you can pack your bowl in the same way you normally would, and then just sprinkle a bit of kief over top of the cannabis. Place the kief in a way that’s kind of cornering the cannabis so that it won’t burn away too fast.
Cornering the cannabis basically just means that instead of just fully covering the cannabis with the kief, you’ll be placing the kief in each quadrant of the bowl. One in the top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom-right corners.
If you start to notice that your kief is burning too quickly while smoking joints, there’s a nice little trick that you can try. When you’re starting to roll the joint, put some kief in a line across the rolling paper. Place some ground up cannabis right on the kief and then continue to roll it normally. Sprinkling the kief in a straight line formation down the joint will ensure that the joint will burn more evenly throughout.
If you like smoking tobacco, you can add some kief in a spliff, as well. Roll the kief and tobacco into a joint in the same way that you would as above, with the line down the middle to make sure that it burns the best.
Eating Kief
This might sound strange to some, but lots of people enjoy kief in their coffee or tea in the morning before they start their day. Adding about a quarter of gram to your warm morning beverage should be enough kief to give you a nice high that you’ll experience about half an hour after consuming it. Keep in mind that the strength of the high that you experience will all depend on what strain of cannabis you’re using, as well as your tolerance to it.
Kief Butter
You can also consume kief in the form of kief butter. Lots of edibles use butter that’s been infused with kief. Ensure that your kief is decarboxylated before you do anything. Decarboxylating your kief is what activates the THC, which is what produces the high that people experience. To decarboxylate your kief, all you have to do is place it in a dish that you’ll then place in the oven for seven minutes that’s been heated to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. After the seven minutes, give it a chance to cool off with the cover still intact.
After that, get yourself some butter that’s a little higher in fat content. Around 1/2 of butter should do the trick. Place the butter into a saucepan, and then crank up the heat on your stove to medium or high settings.
Grab about a gram of your kief that’s just been decarboxylated and then stir it into the saucepan until it’s fully dissolved with the butter.
Using a spatula, scoop up the butter into a dish that’s safe with hot contents in it. After the mixture has cooled off, you can now cover it up and put it in your fridge. It’ll be fresh for up to about two months after making it.
Kief can be sprinkled over any of your dishes. Because the flavor of kief is so subtle, it won’t make or break what you’ve just cooked. Sometimes people like sprinkling kief over their pizzas or pasta dishes, and others even like adding it to their soups or stews.
For those that are into edible recipes, a lot of people like adding kief instead of actual cannabis bud. For whatever edible recipe you’re making, all you have to do is add in about a half or two-thirds of the amount of kief instead of the cannabis.
Making Hash Out Of Kief
Many people like just turning their kief directly into hash. To do that, you’ll want to get an iron and turn it to the lowest setting that it can go to. You don’t have to worry about not having a steam function for this method to work. If you have a hair straightener handy, that’ll work as well on the lowest setting.
Gather some parchment paper and then place it right on the ironing board. You’ll want a bigger piece of parchment paper that’s about a foot in length for best results. Give the parchment paper a fold in half before you put it onto the ironing board. For those that don’t happen to have an ironing board handy, you can just put a blanket or towel onto a flat area. One thing to note is that if you don’t have any parchment paper and are tempted to use wax paper, don’t. The kief will, unfortunately, stick to the wax paper and create a big mess.
Next, you’ll want to spread about a quarter of kief right in between the fold of the parchment paper. On the bottom layer of the parchment paper, sprinkle the kief, ensuring that it’s closer to the fold as opposed to the edge of it. It shouldn’t be any more than a quarter of an inch thick. Now, carefully fold over the top half of parchment paper so that it’s covering the kief.
You’ll now want to find a buffer that covers over the parchment paper. Any old shirt or towel should work just fine. Doing this will prevent the kief and parchment paper from burning.
In about three or four-second intervals, press over it with an iron, ensuring that you switch over the parchment paper often. Remember, your iron should be on the lowest settings for best results, Swipe back and forth across the shirt or towel buffer about twenty times in total. The heat shouldn’t be left on the same area for any more than three seconds. After around five back and forth motions of the iron, the parchment paper should be flipped delicately.
When you notice that your hash is dense, compact, and isn’t sticky anymore, that’s how you’ll know it’s done. You can now light up your hash in whatever way you like to smoke it in, or you can always just add it to your favorite food or beverage.
