When people are rolling joints or blunts, they’re usually not sitting there counting every little bit of weed that they put into it. Most people just eyeball how much weed they want to add to a joint or blunt, but there are still some that like to keep things more organized and measure it out. One study took a closer look at how much weed people use for their joints or blunts, and it’s actually lower than what you might think. The question remains, how many blunts can you roll with a gram?
Law enforcement, political representatives, and researchers might all want to know how much weed is typically added to a joint or blunt.
How Much Weed?
Over the years, there have been many different predictions into how much weed people will use, and one particular study said the average amount was around 0.66 grams. According to the federal government, that number was a bit lower, sitting at 0.43 grams.
Cannabis users will obviously say the amount of weed used will be a lot higher. According to one survey conducted by a weed magazine, the average number of grams used in a joint was one. Almost just as many cannabis users said that the number of grams was 0.5.
According to another study that was taken from numbers based on federal drug arrest data, the amount that was found to be used was closer to 0.32 grams of weed.
These estimates help people develop a good idea of how much weed cannabis users typically smoke. A lot of reports tend to go by how many joints a user has smoked, but that information isn’t exactly useful at all because some people can fit 3 grams of weed in a single blunt.
It’s much more useful to look at the amount of weed that each joint being smoked contains. If someone says that they smoke ten joints a week while another person says they smoke 2 joints a week, with each joint containing 5 grams of weed, you can see why the data could be skewed disproportionately.
A lot of the data being gathered can be useful for policymakers creating drug policies. The data is also useful to develop a better idea of what goes on with cannabis on the black market.
What about Cannabis Pricing?
The pricing on cannabis tends to differ depending on the location of the purchase, the quantity being purchased, and the quality of the weed. The Department of Justice in the U.S. looked at a bunch of data on people who were arrested between 2000 and 2003, as well as 2007 to 2010.
The data found that people were paying around $6.80 for a gram of cannabis and that a joint cost around $3.50. If someone is paying for a bulk quantity of weed, the price could be different due to the discount being given for a large purchase of it. If you happen to be purchasing a full ounce of weed, you’ll know that the price will be much less than if you were to buy that full ounce in single gram quantities.
Looking into it a little further, they took the price of a joint and divided it by the price of a gram, and found out that each gram weighed about 0.5 of a gram. In order to reflect the bulk pricing discount, a formula was used to determine that around 0.32 grams of weed were used in every joint.
The people conducting this research did admit that the estimates might still not be completely perfect because the data was taken from people who were arrested.
Another cannabis survey conducted in 2015 found that the majority of cannabis users are able to get about three joints in total from one gram of cannabis. This equals 0.33 grams of cannabis for every joint.
Weight is only one part of the broader picture. THC needs to be taken into consideration too. Not every strain of cannabis you purchase will be as potent as the next. With some strains of low-level cannabis, it might take half of a gram just to feel high in comparison to a strain that might make you feel just as high after taking one toke. One report done by the National Drug Control Policy in the U.S. found that the THC content in cannabis increased by up to 3% between the years 2000 and 2010.
